Description Our Large Rustic Farmhouse Bat Shelter will provide your yard with traditional pest control. This bat shelter is functional and attractive! Bats are beneficial in that they consume thousands of insects in a single evening. From Bat Conservation International, “Bats are a critical component of our ecosystem, deeply rooted in culture and tradition, and one of the most fascinating taxa in existence. Bats have been on Earth for more than 50 million years. With more than 1,400 species, they are the second largest order of mammals, and are widely dispersed across six continents. Globally, bats provide vital ecosystem services in the form of insect pest consumption, plant pollination, and seed dispersal, making them essential to the health of global ecosystems. Today, bats are under unprecedented threat from widespread habitat destruction, hunting, accelerated climate change, invasive species, and other stresses. Without concerted international action, their populations will continue to fall, driving many species to extinction.” Even in the wild, bats often have difficulty finding safe roosts. Their consistent preference is for places unreachable by snakes or small mammal predators The wooden body of this Large Rustic Farmhouse Bat Shelter is a perfect day time roost, as the deeply grooved lines on the interior provide gripping spots for the bats (important). The single chamber accommodates up to 25 bats, and a slanted roof directs rain away from the unit. Corrugated metal sheeting covers the roof for a country chic effect, enhanced by the weathered appearance of the wood. A stylized, wooden bat figure adorns the front of the shelter, and the flat back of the unit may mounted on a wall or tree via two pre-drilled holes. The Large Rustic Farmhouse Bat Shelter will be a wonderful addition to your yard or garden. You can provide a safe roosting spot, and know that you are aiding our native bats! Features: Accommodates up to 25 bats Grooved interior allows bats to climb inside Two pre-drilled exterior rear holes allow for easy mounting on a post, out building or tree Corrugated metal roof protects the wood underneath Rustic, dark wood blends in with the surroundings, absorbs heat from the sun that bats need, and needs no maintenance Dimensions: 16″ high x 12″ wide x 5″ deep Shipping weight: 6lbs Placement suggestions: The higher a bat house is located, the greater the occupancy success. Mounting houses on poles can help accommodate bat preferences for roosts 15 to 20 feet or higher and offers ideal opportunities to take advantage of solar heating, especially in northern areas. Location within 1/2 mile of aquatic habitat is ideal (streams, rivers, marsh, swamp, ponds, etc) A further advantage of poles is predator protection. Instinctual fear of predators may explain bat preferences for higher roosting sites. Where climbing predators are a problem, poles can be wrapped with an 18-inch piece of sheet metal three feet above the ground Bat houses should have 10-14 feet of clear space above any vegetation below the bat house. Bat houses should be mounted 20 to 30 feet from the nearest trees. Bats are more likely to move into a group of three or more roosts. Multiple bat houses can be mounted side-by-side on buildings and structures or mounted back-to-back on poles. Some bat house owners number bat houses to identify roosts.
